Did you know that Mother’s Day has been celebrated in Europe since the 1600’s?  It began as a day for distant children to return home to visit their mothers, and for working mothers to return to their homes in celebration- a day of peace, family togetherness, appreciation, and gifting.

I love this story!  When did we begin celebrating Mother’s Day in the U.S?  In 1908 a U.S. Senator from Nebraska, Elmer Burkett, proposed making Mother’s Day a national holiday at the request of the Young Men’s Christian Association (go YMCA!). The proposal was defeated, but by the next year, fourty-six states were celebrating Mother’s Day anyway.  The idea caught on, and in 1914 Woodrow Wilson signed it into national observance, declaring the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.

Currently, Mother’s day is celebrated in many countries around the world.  In the U.S. the top three activities to celebrate mothers are:  family brunch, the gift of jewelry, and flowers.

Each country celebrates in it’s own way.  In Finland, Aidipayiva, is the day for mom to enjoy breakfast in bed, served by the entire family, who awoke early to pick a fresh spring bouquet of flowers in her honor.  Italians celebrate La Festa della Mamma with a great feast, including heart shaped cake.  Italian school children make a secret gift to present to mama, and do all her chores for the day.  In Thailand, Mother’s Day happens to share the date with the birthday of their beloved queen, Sirikit Kitayakara, who has reigned since 1950.
